One capability page beats one generic services page, every time

A single "our services" page trying to cover five distinct applications forces every visitor to guess whether their specific need is covered. It also gives search engines nothing specific to rank for beyond the company name. Split it into pages built around real applications (the industries, tolerances and volumes you can actually deliver) and both problems disappear at once.

This does not mean producing dozens of thin pages chasing every keyword variant. Five properly built application pages will consistently outperform twenty shallow ones, both for the humans reading them and for how search engines evaluate depth.

Specification FAQs are worth the effort here because they do two jobs simultaneously: they answer the exact question a buyer has before enquiring, and they reduce the number of clarifying emails your sales team sends before a quote can even start.

A worked scenario: two suppliers, one shortlist, five minutes

A buyer sourcing precision-machined brackets for a new equipment build opens two supplier sites in adjacent tabs. Site A leads with "innovative engineering solutions for a changing world" and a stock photo of gears. Site B leads with a named application ("CNC-machined aluminium brackets, ±0.05mm, batches of 50 to 5,000") and a downloadable material certificate.

The buyer never contacts Site A. Not because the underlying capability is worse (it may well be identical) but because Site A gave them nothing to check, and checking is exactly what this purchase decision runs on. Site B gets the enquiry, and the enquiry already contains the tolerance and batch size, so the first reply can be a real quote instead of a round of clarifying questions.

The size argument runs the other way

Smaller mechanical engineering firms often assume a bigger competitor automatically wins online. Technically literate buyers notice inconsistency fast, and it costs more trust than an honest limitation ever would.

Keep ownership of technical claims with your engineers, whoever writes the copy. An agency or marketer can structure and polish the page, but only someone who actually runs the process should sign off on whether a tolerance or capacity claim is accurate.

A simple fix that catches most of this: before publishing an application page, sit the sales team’s latest quoting template next to the draft copy and compare tolerance, lead time and minimum order language line by line. Disagreements surface in minutes this way, well before a buyer finds them the hard way mid-negotiation.

WhatsApp and a phone call still close what search opens

A mechanical engineering buyer will frequently research on Google, shortlist on a capability page, then WhatsApp a drawing snippet or a photo of a worn part rather than complete a full RFQ form, especially for smaller or urgent jobs. If that channel is not surfaced and staffed, the conversation either happens through a salesperson’s personal number with no record of it, or it does not happen and a competitor gets it instead.

Put the WhatsApp number next to the enquiry form, not buried in a footer icon, and treat replies through it with the same tracking discipline as a form submission. A channel nobody logs is a channel nobody can improve.

SEO versus paid: a trade-off worth naming plainly

Search engine optimisation for application pages compounds, a well-built page ranks for years, at close to zero marginal cost per additional visitor, but it takes months to earn that ranking and cannot be switched on for a specific RFQ deadline next week.
